This Old House Sawdust Girl There are several ways you can lay the 1×4 boards that will give you different looks. I tried a few and ended up selecting a simple mitered corner. No additional trim or 1×2. No overlapping or overhang. I loved it so much that I plan to rip out the trim I JUST installed in the kitchen and use this style.

I'm trying to decide between 1x6 and 1x4 baseboard trim. I have installed craftsman/farmhouse style window casings (slightly seen in photo) and will be going for a modern-ish farmhouse design. My ceilings are low at 92" high. If I do anything larger than 3.5" trim ( 1x4) I will need to route small sections of trim to fit underneath wall.

It's really common to use 1x4 or 1x6 for baseboards, I don't know who would be so opposed to that. An extremely common way of dressing up the 1x baseboard style is to put some sort of cap piece on top of the 1x, like an ogee base cap. Almost every house from the 20s-50s has that look.
